"Research is the effort of the mind to comprehend relationships which no one has previously known, and in its finest exemplification it is practical as well as theoretical, trending always toward worthwhile relationships, demanding common sense as well as uncommon ability."

-- H. D. Arnold, 1925, first research director at Bell Labs

Bell System Technical Journal Paper Directory

The Bell System Technical Journal is/was a repository of scientific research performed at AT&T's Bell Labs. For decades, Bell Labs' research has been documented in the Journal, but finding the titles of those papers is very difficult without physical access to a major University library.

Since the information contained with Journal is extremely useful and valuable and should be accessible, this website has been created to provide a listing of all the paper titles, authors, and where to locate them.

At the moment, the database contains the titles of papers from 1922-1960 in their entirety, as well as a selection of others that were contributed via Wikipedia. The collection will grow, though, as more Tables of Contents are scanned and indexed.
